Travis Hunter was already this season’s most decorated college football player even before Saturday. Now he’s added the sport’s most prestigious award, the Heisman Trophy.

The Colorado wide receiver/cornerback is the first two-way player to win the award since Michigan’s Charles Woodson in 1997, and he had a lot of people to thank, including his coach Deion Sanders, his teammate Shedeur Sanders, his mom, his dad, his fiancée Leanna Lenee and, most unexpected of all, Lil Wayne.

The five-time Grammy Award-winning rapper attended the Heisman ceremony as a guest of Hunter’s, and the 21-year-old gave him props — but not before admitting that he wasn’t always a fan.

“My fiancée loves you … I didn’t know none of your songs until she let me know because I don’t listen to music,” Hunter said.

“She told me, ‘You’ve got to listen to this. If you don’t listen to music, listen to Wayne. And from that day on, that’s all I listen to. Pregame music, those are the songs I listen to. When I get to that [Dodge Ram] TRX and I blast that music, I’m listening to Wayne.”

Hunter then broke out his impression of the rapper, while singing part of “6 Foot 7 Foot” from Lil Wayne’s 2011 multi-platinum album “Tha Carter IV.”

“That my song,” Hunter exclaimed, while the crowd laughed with approval.

“I respect you for coming out here and coming to support me,” Hunter added.

Lil Wayne is a noted sports fan who showed up to support the Buffaloes at a game in 2023 and who also appeared on the former FS1 show “Undisputed.”

In addition to winning the Heisman, Hunter has also been named the AP college football player of the year and has taken home the Walter Camp Award for player of the year, Biletnikoff Award for outstanding receiver and Bednarik Award for defensive player of the Year.

Next up for Hunter, he and the Buffaloes will face BYU in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 28. After that, Hunter, who has said that he is “for sure” entering the draft, will prepare for the NFL. In his latest mock draft, Rob Rang projects the New York Giants will select Hunter with the No. 1 pick.
