Snapshots from sixth day of COP29 in Baku

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 16. The sixth day of
the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) is underway.

This landmark event has brought together representatives,
leaders, and climate experts from around the globe.

The decision to host COP29 in Azerbaijan was made on December 11
last year during a plenary session of COP28 in Dubai.

The conference officially opened on November 11 at the Baku
Olympic Stadium and will run until November 22. It marks the
largest event ever organized by Azerbaijan and the first COP
session held in the region.

A high-level World Leaders’ Summit on Climate Action was held on
November 12-13 as part of the conference.

A key outcome anticipated from COP29 is reaching an agreement on
a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for
climate financing.

In addition to laying the groundwork for climate action, the
establishment of financing mechanisms is essential for meeting the
1.5°C target and fostering global collaboration.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, signed at the
Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent
dangerous human interference with the climate system. The COP, or
Conference of the Parties, serves as the Convention’s
decision-making body.

The Convention has 198 member states. Unless otherwise agreed,
COP sessions are held annually. The first COP was convened in
Berlin in March 1995, with its secretariat located in Bonn.
