BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 15. Delegates from
colonized regions organized a protest at COP29 to highlight the
pervasive infringements on the rights of indigenous populations,
Trend
reports.

The protesters called for the cessation of the exploitative
actions of colonial authorities and the eradication of their
enduring effects, especially regarding environmental degradation
and public health detriment. Representatives of Indigenous people
from colonized regions denounced the egregious human rights abuses
committed by colonial powers, along with the serious transgressions
and nuclear testing conducted in former colonies, which have
profoundly affected local inhabitants.

The protest was aimed at raising awareness among the
international community, with demonstrators voicing specific
demands to address the long-lasting consequences of colonial
exploitation. Slogans chanted during the protest included: “Stop
human rights violations in overseas territories,” “Compensate the
affected populations,” “Restore environmental damage,” “Hear the
voices of Indigenous peoples,” and “The effects of nuclear testing
in overseas territories are killing people.”

The protesters emphasized the need for a thorough investigation
into the ongoing effects of colonialism, urging decisive actions
from the international community. They called for urgent measures
to combat exploitation and human rights violations that continued
even after the end of the colonial era. The protesters also called
for greater international solidarity against colonialism and for
stronger political and legal actions to ensure the rights of
indigenous peoples.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run
until November 22, opened at the Baku Olympic Stadium on November
11.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement
signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous
human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP
(Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is
the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the
Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless
otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first
COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is
located in Bonn.
