BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. In the framework
of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), panel discussions
were held on “Decarbonizing and Adapting the Cotton-to-Clothing
Value Chain,” Trend reports via Azerbaijan’s Ministry of
Agriculture.

Speaking at the discussions, Deputy Minister of Agriculture
Sarvan Jafarov emphasized the sustainable development of cotton
growing in our country and noted the importance of science,
technology, and innovation-based approaches to overcoming
difficulties caused by climate change.

The Deputy Minister noted that Azerbaijan is implementing a
development strategy in the field of cotton production and
processing and uses the experience of countries and international
organizations specializing in cotton growing in this field. In
particular, in recent years, within the framework of joint projects
with the International Atomic Energy Agency, studies have been
carried out in our country, and possibilities of application of
nuclear technologies in the creation of new varieties have been
studied.

Sarvan Jafarov noted that the application of scientific
approaches in practice has yielded positive results; as a result of
proper agricultural experiments according to the climate applied in
the pilot planting plots, the yields have doubled.

In the course of the discussions, it was noted that our country
is striving to strengthen the domestic value chain by modernizing
the cotton processing infrastructure. Investments in new
technologies help improve quality, develop processing capacity, and
create new jobs in rural areas. Combined with digitalization
initiatives and strong financial support mechanisms, these
development models support Azerbaijan’s vision to deliver
competitive cotton products to international markets, making the
cotton processing sector a sustainable and valuable sector.

The panel discussions exchanged views on international
experiences aimed at minimizing the difficulties caused by climate
change and answered participants’ questions.

To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to
the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will
run until November 22, opened on November 11 at the Baku Olympic
Stadium.

The event is the largest organized by Azerbaijan to date and is
the first time the region has hosted the event in Azerbaijan.
Within COP29, the highest-level event – the summit of world leaders
on climate action – will be held on November 12–13.

The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and
ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate
finance. The COP29 chairmanship has launched 14 initiatives that
include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable
Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy
storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane
reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies,
and other topics.
