Fuel prices in Switzerland are falling again. For the first time since early September the average price of a litre of unleaded 95 petrol stands at CHF1.99 ($2.40), according to TCS figures published on Friday.
Within a week, the average price for unleaded 95, as calculated by the Swiss Touring Club (TCS), has thus fallen by CHF0.12, or just under 6%. A litre of unleaded 98 has also fallen by an average of CHF0.12 compared with last week’s figure, to CHF2.10.
According to the latest TCS figures, the price drop for a litre of diesel has been smaller: it has fallen by just CHF0.06 to CHF2.34.

On the international crude oil markets, the situation has continued to ease over the past few days. On Friday the price of a barrel of North Sea Brent crude stood at just over $97 (CHF79), having been quoted at $118 a week earlier. Hopes that the Democrats’ clear victory in the US midterm elections could accelerate efforts to end the war in the Middle East were a key factor in this easing of tensions.
Changes in the oil market usually take some time to be reflected at Swiss petrol stations. However, the persistently low water levels in the River Rhine had also contributed to the rising prices in recent weeks, as they made transport to Switzerland considerably more expensive. There has been no relief on this front, however: the water level has fallen further.
