Danger level feel-like heat is expected in nine areas on Wednesday, posing a risk of heat stroke during prolonged exposure, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The heat index is expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius in Dumangas, Iloilo, which is likely to record the highest temperature, PAGASA said in its latest heat index forecast.

Areas such as Coron, Palawan; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Daet, Camarines Norte; Iloilo City; Dumaguete City; and Borongan, Eastern Samar are also expected to experience danger level heat indices of 42 degrees Celsius.

The same temperature is expected in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, and Butuan City.

PAGASA said danger level heat indices, which range from 42 to 51 degrees Celsius, could cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Prolonged exposure may also lead to heat stroke.

Meanwhile, extreme caution level heat indices are expected in the rest of the country, which may also cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion, and could lead to heat stroke during prolonged physical activity under these conditions.

The country’s warm temperatures come as a strong El Niño is being observed in the tropical Pacific, which is likely to persist until the first half of 2027. — Edg Adrian A. Eva
