November to bring rain, storms and snow to Spain
November begins with a drop in minimum temperatures and instability due to the arrival of a mass of cold air, particularly in Canary Islands and areas of the Catalan and Balearic coasts, according to Rubén del Campo, spokesperson for the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
This Tuesday November 3rd, will see heavy showers in the Canary Islands, accompanied by thunderstorms. It could also bring persistent rain to the Catalan coast, the Balearic Islands and Cantabria.
Snow is also expected in the Pyrenees above 1,500 metres. Temperatures will drop significantly, especially in the north and centre of the peninsula, with maximum temperatures between 6 and 8C lower than Monday. Cities like Segovia and Ávila will see lows of around -2C.
Spain has most deaths from train crashes in EU in last 25 years
The Adamuz and Urda rail accidents have broken all previous records and place Spain as the EU country with the highest number of train fatalities in the last 25 years.
Of the last four major rail crashes in the EU with more than 40 victims, three occurred in Spain. An accident in Tempi, Greece, on February 28th, 2023, resulted in 57 people losing their lives and was deadliest in Greek history.
Although the death toll from the latest train accident continues to rise, the Angrois train crash near Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in July 2013 remains the deadliest in Europe in terms of fatalities. Eighty people died when an Alvia train, travelling from Madrid to Ferrol, derailed when it broke the speed limit going around a curve.
Job creation in Spain to halve in the next two years
Since 2021, around 3.5 million jobs have been created in Spain and numbers have remained strong. This could all be about to change, however, as according think tank Funcas, in the next two years, employment will increase at an average annual rate of 1.3 percent. This is half the rate recorded in the three-year period from 2023 to 2025.
Funcas analysts predict that the increase will fall from 2.3 percent in 2026 to 1.6 percent in 2027 and 1 percent in 2028.
The slowdown in job creation has also been confirmed by other institutions and by the Labour Force Survey (EPA), which reveals that the employment rate is declining. In the third quarter of this year, it only increased by 0.32 percent.
