KHARKIV — Russia continued its attacks on Ukraine, killing at least six people, including an Azerbaijani citizen, and injuring dozens others, including 10 children, in strikes on the Kyiv region, Kharkiv, and Dnipro.
The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv was engulfed in flames as a result of a Russian drone attack that happened shortly after noon local time on September 28, following an overnight strike on the capital.
Footage from the scene of the academy showed people trying to escape the burning building.
A Kyiv official said the strike caused injuries and fatalities, adding that emergency and other relevant services were working at the scene and urging residents to stay away from the area. One woman was reported killed in the attack.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the strike and said that “a rescue operation is underway: crews are putting out the fire and searching for people who may have been trapped inside.”
“Russia will definitely face a response to this. And every one of Ukraine’s partners must see from this terror, from these strikes, that supporting Ukraine means truly supporting people’s lives – supporting the principle that terror must never be normalized, anywhere,” he said in a post on X of the multiple attacks across the country on September 28.
Earlier, Zelenskyy condemned Moscow’s “brutal strike” overnight on the country’s second-biggest city, Kharkiv, that hit a high-rise apartment building.
“Two people were killed in the Kyiv region, one of them a citizen of Azerbaijan,” Zelenskyy said in post on X.
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of its citizen, adding that the embassy in Kyiv is providing consular assistance to repatriate his remains.
At least 35 people, including 10 children, were injured in the Russian overnight attack on Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported on September 28.
Terekhov said a Russian guided aerial bomb struck a multistory apartment building.
He later said search-and-rescue operations had ended, with no one found under the rubble, while municipal services and the State Emergency Service continued clearing the debris from the attack.
“All the windows were blown out, and the frames were damaged,” Yuriy, a resident of the damaged apartment building in Kharkiv, told RFE/RL while sitting outside with his dog. “There was my wife and our dog to save — I had no time to worry,” he added, recalling the moment of the attack. He said they would cover the damaged windows with plastic sheeting and remain in the apartment.
“We’ll see what happens next,” he said.
In a separate attack, regional authorities reported on September 28 that a Russian strike on central Dnipro hit an office building, causing a fire.
Dnipro Regional Governor Oleksandr Hanzha said the attack killed three people and injured at least 12 more.
Sharing photos of the aftermath on Telegram, Hanzha wrote: “This is the center of Dnipro, where hundreds of people are here in the middle of the working day. This is where the Russians struck. Three people were killed. Their lives were cut short by the enemy attack.”
The latest string of attacks comes only a day after another Russian barrage that killed eight people across the country on September 27.
In his nightly address to the nation on September 27, Zelenskyy said the attacks showed that Russia has no interest in ending the war.
Meanwhile, according to the OSINT analysis of the ASTRA monitoring Telegram channel, Ukraine hit an oil depot in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region, causing a large fire.
Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) confirmed the overnight attack in Russia’s Krasnodar region, stating that its forces struck four oil depots, targeting fuel infrastructure used to supply Russian forces.
Ukraine’s defense forces have liberated three more villages in northern Donetsk region, the Ukrainian military reported on September 28.
Russia’s Defense Ministry has not yet commented on the claim, while earlier saying its forces struck Ukrainian logistics, communications, port infrastructure, and vessels overnight.
