Spain set for drastic drop in temperatures
September will finally see the end of summer temperatures in Spain as a mass of polar air is set to bring a radical change in the weather, according to experts at eltiempo.es, who forecast drops in temperature of 8-10C in many parts of Spain from Wednesday.
Rubén del Campo, spokesperson for Aemet, Spain’s state weather agency, told Spanish media there will also be rain, which will be heaviest in the north of the peninsula, before stable weather returns from Thursday onwards.
On Tuesday an Atlantic front will arrive via Galicia, followed the mass of polar air that will cause temperatures to drop sharply, bringing rain and storms between Tuesday and Thursday in many regions.
The rain will be heavy in places, but the heaviest downpours are expected in parts of Galicia, Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands.
Sánchez warns ‘extremist threat’ advancing after German state election
Spain’s Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Monday warned an “extremist threat” was advancing throughout the world after Germany’s far-right AfD secured a landmark landslide success in a state election.
Sunday’s vote was a “warning that the extremist threat, largely thanks to the surrender of the traditional right, is gaining ground in Europe and in the world”, Sánchez, one of Europe’s few leftist leaders, told a Socialist party gathering in Madrid.
Rallying against the threat of the far-right has long been a political move in the Sánchez playbook, and something he used effectively during the 2023 general election campaign to piece together a fragile parliamentary majority.
Spanish government launches search engine for affordable housing
A government-run online search engine to find public and affordable rental properties in Spain is now up and running.
As announced by the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, the ‘Casa 47’ portal currently offers 800 flats spread across various regions, with a further 1,500 to be added.
“This is another step forward in a national policy. We want to be a country where having decent housing is not a privilege reserved for the few,” said Sánchez.
Through the search engine, users can access all public housing calls for applications across the country, as well as find detailed information on the available properties, type, location, deadlines and eligibility criteria.
The homes meet three requirements: stability (tenants’ tenancy agreements will last for up to 75 years), affordability (the rent may never exceed 30 percent of the average income in the region) and accessibility.
Spain to welcome Algerian president visit at time of tensions with Morocco
The President of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, will visit Spain in October on a state visit at the invitation of King Felipe VI and the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.
The trip, confirmed by diplomatic sources in early September, will mark the end of a process of bilateral normalisation following years of tension and will focus on energy, as Algeria is Spain’s main gas supplier, as well as migration and security.
The visit also comes at a time of diplomatic tension with Morocco, especially in light of the recent Ceuta border rush.
