Three hypotheses are investigated in the deadly shooting in Aargau

As the police are continuing to hunt for gunmen who opened fire at a rave on Sunday, killing one person and wounding five others, they are looking at three possible hypotheses behind the shooting.

The motives they consider most likely are a terrorist attack, a rampage, or “settling of scores within the criminal underworld,” Michael Leupold, the cantonal police commander said on Sunday evening.

Switzerland to tighten rules on disposal of plastic packaging

In the future, plastic waste – including yogurt containers and milk cartons – will have to be sorted and properly recycled, rather than just being thrown with the trash.

Coop, Migros, and other retailers will be required to take back this packaging – as is currently the case with glass and PET bottles – or else organise its collection through external service providers.

Americans in Switzerland are urged to register for their country’s mid-term elections

From today, August 31st until October 4th, VotefromAbroad.org will display voter outreach posters in key areas throughout Zurich, encouraging Americans living in Switzerland to request their ballots and participate in the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.

To be held on November 3rd, these elections will be for the 435 members of the US House of Representatives.

The Zurich ad campaign is part of a broader voter outreach effort that will also include postcards mailed to U.S. citizens across Switzerland reminding them to request their ballots and vote.

Similar campaigns have already been launched in Geneva and Basel.

Homeowner takes neighbours to court for vacuuming too often

A woman living near Zurich filed several lawsuits against her upstairs neighbours for vacuuming their apartment twice a week, 25 minutes each time (always on Thursdays and Saturdays – never on Sundays), which led to years of legal battles.

The woman demanded that neighbours install soundproofing in the living and dining room; after their refusal to do so, she took her grievance to several courts, losing each time.

The matter eventually landed in the Federal Court – Switzerland’s highest.

It ruled last week that 50 minutes of vacuuming per week caused only a minor disturbance.

Furthermore, the normal use of a home “inevitably gives rise to noise disturbances that neighbours must, in principle, tolerate.”

The plaintiff must now pay 3,000 francs in administrative fees – a message that she probably heard loud and clear.
