Switzerland’s Weisshorn Glacier is under the threat of collapse; Swiss households more financially secure than ever; and more news in our roundup on Wednesday.

The Weisshorn Glacier is under the threat of imminent collapse

The municipality of Randa, near Zermatt in Valais, has alerted its residents to the risk of the glacier breaking up.

The area is now closed to the public.

“Over the next few days, ruptures are possible,” local authorities warned on Tuesday.

“The situation is being closely monitored to determine whether the increased risk persists or eases,” they said, adding that a “specially installed interferometric radar is among the equipment being used for monitoring and assessing the situation.”

Rain brought only limited relief to drought-ridden nature

Though it was heavy at times in some parts of the country, this week’s rainfall eased the drought “only slightly.”

According to meteorologist Roger Perret, the rain did not penetrate the deepest layers of the soil. Therefore, “the soil remains dry at depth and lake levels are still low.”

It would take two to three weeks of continuous rain to counter the drought, but forecast for the next few days calls for sunny and warm weather.

Twenty-two organisations have joined the opposition to the neutrality initiative

Swiss voters will decide on September 27th whether to approve or reject the. hard-right’s proposal to tighten the country’s neutrality.

Active particularly in the fields of peace, human rights, and European politics, these groups oppose the move which, they argue, would make Switzerland a more isolated country.

They also point out that Switzerland “can only remain credible as a mediator if it is integrated into international networks and positions itself as a reliable member of a democratic community based on international law.”

Residents of Switzerland have never earned and saved as much as in 2025

According to federal statistics published on Tuesday, Swiss households have never been as financially secure as in 2025.

The disposable per-capita income per household exceeded 65,000 francs for the first time, and they were able to save 20 percent of their income – despite increasing housing, health insurance, and other costs.

This picture, however, represents a national average and varies between regions, income brackets, and household types.
