UK eVisa mix-up strands woman in Spain after being mistaken for twin sister

A woman who has settled status in the UK was left stuck in Spain after the Home Office’s eVisa system mixed her up with her twin sister.

Nadia Webb who has lived in the UK for eight years expected to return home after a holiday in Spain, but when she reached the boarding gate she was told she could not board her flight because her UK residency status was not showing correctly in the system and the plane left without her. 

“My digital settled status had become linked to my identical twin sister’s details rather than my own, meaning my status could not be properly matched to my identity,” she told news site Politico.

“I was informed that this is a known technical issue affecting some twins within the Home Office system”, she added. 

Man arrested in Palma de Mallorca for threatening and robbing tourists 

The National Police have arrested a man in the capital of Mallorca for allegedly threatening tourists on Playa de Palma with knives, stones and broken glass bottles, and then forcing them to give up their valuables. 

The arrest stems from investigations into four violent robberies committed since the end of June, all of them with very similar circumstances.

The events all took place in the early hours of the morning, taking advantage of tourists coming back from nightclubs, the Balearic Islands Police Headquarters revealed. 

The investigation remains open and further arrests are possible after some incidents reported accomplices. 

Australia temporarily pauses working holiday visas for Spaniards

Australia is putting the well-known working holiday visa on hold for people from 24 countries, including Spain. 

It will also suspend these visas for those from Portugal, Switzerland, Greece and Austria, as well as several countries across Asia and South America. 

The visa allows young people between the ages between 18 and 30 to live in Australia and have the right to work there for up to three years. 

Applications are subject to annual limits and open each year on July 2nd of each year. There were 3,400 places available per year for Spaniards, but these will be put on hold until further notice. 

Spanish PM assembles National Security Council over Ceuta crisis

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will finally convene the National Security Council over the Ceuta crisis, almost a month after 80,000 undocumented migrants stormed the city.

The meeting is to take place this Tuesday, August 25th before the first Cabinet meeting of the new term, which will focus on the consequences of what happened. Sánchez is also expected to announce new measures to prevent this from happening in the future. 

The National Security Council is the highest body the Prime Minister can call on in situations that compromise security. Since the crisis erupted, the President of Ceuta, Juan Jesús Vivas has repeatedly called for help of this kind.
