Spanish rail worker dies after being crushed by heavy machinery
A Renfe worker from a contracting company died on Wednesday after suffering a work accident at the Renfe base in Villaverde (Madrid).
The causes of the accident are currently under investigation, and so far it is known that it occurred during maintenance work, but no further information has been released.
In addition to the deceased worker, two other workers were injured and required medical attention .
According to El País, the 30-year-old worker was crushed by heavy machinery, while the other two suffered bone fractures.
Alicante, Murcia and Valencia to sizzle in 42C heat on Thursday
The summer’s third heatwave continues unabated, with almost all of Spain under a heat warning issued by the national weather agency Aemet.
Andalusia, Aragón, the Balearic Islands, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia and Madrid are under an orange alert, and practically the rest of the country is under a yellow alert. Only some areas in the north and the Canary Islands are spared.

There are very few parts of the country where temperatures won’t exceed 30C, and some areas are already at 40C.
Aemet has issued red alerts for Murcia, the southern coast of Alicante and Valencia, where temperatures could reach 44C in the former and 42C in the latter.
Storms are also expected in many of the regions with heat alerts.
Opposition leader refers to Sánchez as corruption kingpin
The leader of the Spanish People’s Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, called a press conference on Wednesday to formally announce his candidacy for the 2027 general elections and outline some of his priorities, while also taking stock of the political year.
Feijóo also used this appearance before the media to harshly criticise the current Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, stating that “there is a cause-and-effect relationship between Sánchez’s arrival in government and corruption invading everything around him.”
The PP candidate asserted that to find the so-called ground zero “of the greatest corruption in our democracy, one doesn’t have to go to the Canary Islands, Navarre, or Valencia,” since it is located “in Moncloa Palace.”
He also declared that “Mr. X is Sánchez himself”, in essence referring to the PM as the kingpin in the shadows of the corruption scandals that have been embroiling the ruling Socialist Party.
Mural of Spain’s World Cup hero Ferran vandalised by Catalan separatists
An artistic tribute to Ferran Torres for his decisive goal in the World Cup final barely lasted a few hours.
The mural, painted by street artist TvBoy in the Gràcia neighbourhood of Barcelona, was vandalised with white paint and several politically charged inscriptions (including “we want a Catalan national team”), reigniting the debate about the use of public space and the growing polarisation surrounding national symbols.
Ferran Torres, who’s from a village in Valencia, scored the winning goal for Spain in extra-time against Argentina in Sunday’s World Cup final.
The artwork depicted the Valencian striker wearing the Spanish national team jersey and kissing the World Cup trophy.
TvBoy is one of Barcelona’s most renowned urban artists, whose creations often combine current events, sports, and social commentary.
