Tropical Depression Haishen, locally named Josie, is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday, while a new low-pressure area (LPA) has developed with a medium chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone, according to the state weather bureau.
“It is forecast to exit PAR by this afternoon or evening,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 11 a.m. tropical cyclone bulletin.
Haishen, which entered PAR early Tuesday morning, is expected to exit after turning northeastward within the next 12 hours, moving away from the country.
It was last located 1,070 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon.
The tropical depression has also weakened from a tropical storm, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 55 kph.
Haishen is also expected to further weaken into a low-pressure area within the next 12 hours due to unfavorable environmental conditions.
“Josie is less likely to directly affect the weather conditions of the country throughout the forecast period,” PAGASA said.
Meanwhile, a new LPA has developed inside PAR and has a medium chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours, PAGASA said.
As of 10 a.m., the LPA was located 820 kilometers west of Extreme Northern Luzon.
PAGASA said the LPA has two possible scenarios: it may develop into a tropical storm, or it may move near Hong Kong, reducing the likelihood of developing into a tropical cyclone.
Under either scenario, PAGASA said the weather disturbance is not expected to directly affect the country. — Edg Adrian A. Eva
