Switzerland to be hit by new heatwave as air conditioning units sell out

After a relative ‘lull’ of the past several days, Switzerland will swelter in another wave of extremely hot weather in coming days as air conditioning units sell out.

Although only a few days ago, meteorologists were not able to predict with accuracy another heatwave for July, now the suspense is over.

According to Meteonews weather service, temperatures will rise again starting July 7th.

They will then reach around 32C, with highs potentially reaching 34C by the end of the week in some regions – especially southern and western parts of Switzerland.

Drought and fires

The lack of sustained rainfall in the past weeks means that the drought situation has not improved since the June heatwave and will intensify once again with the new one.

Consequently, the risk of wildfires is high, especially in these regions marked in brown and red in the map below:

And to make the heat situation even worse – particularly indoors – the stock of mobile AC units – the ones you can purchase in Switzerland without a special permission – has…run dry.

For instance, the online site Galaxus sold 38 percent more air conditioners in June 2026 than in June 2025, which was already a record month.

Its stocks are now depleted.

And if you do not own one of these devices already, you will just have to sweat it out.

That’s because the shortage will continue not only at Galaxus but at other stores like Interdiscount as well.

“Merchandise will only arrive in dribs and drabs over the next few weeks, and will not be sufficient before the end of the season,” said Samuel Lea, a spokesperson for Interdiscount.

‘Hot money’

And if you want to snap up an air conditioner on Swiss resale sites, you’d better dig deep into your pockets.

Astute individuals bought out AC units at the beginning of summer and are now reselling them at a hefty profit.

According to Swiss media reports, “there is currently a particularly high number of listings on Ricardo offering brand-new, still-packaged air conditioners. Some of these offers are for models that are already out of stock at Swiss appliance retailers and are now being offered at significantly higher prices.”

“For example, a Midea model normally costs 1,599 francs at Interdiscount. The most expensive listing on Ricardo is asking an immediate purchase price of 2,600 francs for the same unit. To finally enjoy a cooler home, many are willing to pay extra. Another listing has already received 67 bids; the current price there is 2,200 francs.”
