The fire on a passenger bus, in the small town of Kerzers, 20 kilometres (12 miles) west of the Swiss capital Bern, “left at least six dead and five injured, three of them seriously”, officer Frederic Papaux of the Fribourg cantonal police told AFP.

“The police are currently treating the fire as a man-made incident, and even a deliberate act,” he said, without providing further details.

Police said the incident happened Tuesday evening on the main street in the small town 20 kilometres (12 miles) west of the Swiss capital Bern.

Police asked the public to stay away from the area and follow the instructions of emergency responders.

Swiss news agency Keystone-ATS reported that one person was airlifted away by helicopter.
