BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 1. The recent unrest
in Iran resembled a coup, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed
Ali Khamenei said while receiving a group of Iranian citizens in
Tehran today on the occasion of the start of the 47th anniversary
of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Trend reports.
According to him, the destruction of effective and important
centers in the country’s governance, such as police stations,
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) centers, some state
centers, banks, and damage to mosques, shows that these riots
resemble a coup.
Khamenei added that, of course, the unrest in the country was
suppressed. Unfortunately, there was an attempt to increase the
death toll. The rioters wanted the death toll to be higher. Of
course, the large number of deaths is also regrettable.
The Supreme Leader of Iran noted that the main goal was to
undermine the country’s security. If there is no security in the
country, there is nothing, no bread, no production, no income, no
education, no development.
Protests have been taking place since late December over the
sharp depreciation of Iran’s national currency, the rial, against
foreign currencies, high inflation, and other economic problems.
3,117 people are reported to have died in the protests.
