Certain motorways in Switzerland, especially those near urban centres, are more prone to congestion. The government has plans to prevent them.

According to the Federal Department of Transport, “The national road network is essential for the transport of people and goods. In order to eliminate bottlenecks, reduce traffic congestion times, and avoid bypass traffic, priority will be given to projects with high benefits and rapid implementation.”

To begin with, the givernment wants to eliminate – between 2027 and 2035, Switzerland’s two biggest bottlenecks on the A1 motorway, by widening it to six lanes between Aarau-Ost and the Birrfeld junction in the canton of Aargau, and between Perly and Bernex in the canton of Geneva.

Other measures, such as the repurposing of the emergency lanes, are also planned to prevent traffic jams.

What other work is planned afterwards?

Within the same time period, these sections of the national road network will also be tackled :

N1 Eight-lane expansion Wallisellen – Brüttisellen (Zurich)

N1 Third tube of the Rosenberg Tunnel, with connecting road (St.Gallen)

N2 Rhine Tunnel Basel (Basel-City/Basel-Country)

N2 Lugano South – Mendrisio (Ticino/Italy)

N3 Six-lane expansion of the Zurich western bypass (Limmattal – Urdorf-South)

N4 Fäsenstaub Tunnel (Schaffhausen)

N15 Zurich Oberland motorway Uster East – Betzholz

N23 Amriswil North bypass including connection to Romanshorn (Thurgau)

At the same time, the government is also committed to improving and expanding a number of rail projects in the next few years:
