Spain’s PM warns US action in Venezuela sets ‘dangerous precedent’, freezing temperatures in many parts of Spain on Wednesday and more news from Spain on January 7th.

Freezing temperatures in many parts of Spain on Wednesday

Snow, strong winds, cold weather and huge waves will trigger weather warnings this Wednesday January 7th in 14 of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities.

There will be minimum temperatures of -6C in Girona and Huesca, -5C in Ávila and Cuenca and up to -14C in Parameras de Molina (Guadalajara), according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

There are yellow warnings activated for the cold in Almería, Córdoba, Granada, Jaén, Sevilla, Mallorca, Cantabria, Ávila, Segovia, Soria, Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Tarragona, the Madrid mountain ranges, Murcia, Navarre, Alicante, Castellón and Valencia.

Aemet forecasts significant snow in the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Mountains, and the potential for snowfall at low altitudes in northern Spain.

More than 13,000 small businesses close in Spain in 2025

Spain ended 2025 with 13,586 fewer businesses, which represents an average of 1,132 small businesses that have disappeared each month throughout last year.

That’s according to data provided by the Union of Professionals and Self-Employed Workers of Spain (UPTA).

“This increase in year-on-year losses shows that the problem not only persists, but is intensifying,” the organisation stressed.

UPTA believes that “the situation of small businesses has become a structural emergency. The increase in fixed costs, the tax burden, unequal competition from large platforms, and the lack of effective public policies for protection and modernisation are causing a constant closure of businesses that are the backbone of the local economy and local employment.”

Spain’s PM warns US action in Venezuela sets ‘dangerous precedent’

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warned on Tuesday that the US military operation in Venezuela and capture of Nicolás Maduro sets a “terrible and very dangerous precedent” reminiscent of “other invasions driven by the thirst for oil”.

Sánchez assured that Spain will not “remain silent in the face of violations” of international law.

“Nor can we accept that the territorial integrity of a European state, as is the case with Denmark , is explicitly threatened,” he declared in reference to Trump’s threats over Greenland, during a press conference in Paris following the summit on Ukraine with international partners.
