If you need to go shopping on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in Spain, keep in mind that opening hours for supermarkets and shops won’t be the usual ones.
2025 is coming to a close and Spaniards are preparing to ring in the new year. As you may have guessed, in Spain Nochevieja (New Year’s Eve) and Año Nuevo (New Year’s Day) are two days of first celebration and then rest.
Shops will open on December 31st across Spain but they will close earlier than usual so that workers can enjoy end-of-year celebrations with their friends families.

As for New Year’s Day 2026, you can expect very little to be open. If you’re in the centre of one of Spain’s main cities and tourist spots, you will perhaps find that some shops and restaurants are open, but 99 percent of the usual retail and hospitality businesses across the country will be closed on January 1st.
Below is a breakdown of the opening hours of Spain’s main supermarkets on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Mercadona
Mercadona’s 1,600+ stores in Spain will open on Wednesday (New Year’s Eve 2025), but they will close two and half hours earlier than usual – at 7pm.
On New Year’s Day, all Mercadona supermarkets will remain closed.
Lidl
The German supermarket chain will also open all its branches in Spain for most of New Year’s Eve, but they will close earlier than usual – at 7pm – so make sure to check your closest Lidl’s opening times here.
On New Year’s Day, Lidl supermarkets in Spain will be closed.
Carrefour
The French supermarket chain plans to close its stores at 8 pm on New Years’ Eve on Wednesday, and on New Year’s Day on Thursday they will all be closed.
Other supermarkets in Spain
Other supermarket chains in Spain such as Día, El Corte Inglés, Aldi and Eroski have also shortened their opening hours for New Year’s Eve and will close early, although these will vary depending on the region. Check their websites to find out what your local branch’s opening hours will be.
Once again, on New Year’s Day all of the above will not open their supermarkets.
Supercor Express
If you’re looking to buy some food on New Year’s Day, your best bet will be to check the opening hours of El Corte Ingles’ Supercor Express supermarket, small city supermarkets that tend to open on public holidays.
They are also likely to close later than other supermarkets on New Year’s Eve.
