Cambodia Requests Neutral Venue for Ceasefire Negotiations
Cambodia has formally requested that Thailand hold peace talks in Malaysia, citing ongoing security concerns caused by a two-week escalation of border clashes. In a letter seen by AFP, Cambodia’s Defence Ministry emphasized the need for a neutral location due to the persistent fighting along their shared border, which has resulted in significant casualties and displacement.
The letter, sent by Defence Minister Tea Seiha to his Thai counterpart Nattaphon Narkphanit, highlighted Malaysia’s role as host, noting its current position as Chair of ASEAN. The Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, is seen as a secure and impartial venue to facilitate peace negotiations amid ongoing hostilities.
Existing Tensions and Scheduled Negotiations
Following the renewed violence, both Cambodia and Thailand have expressed intentions to resolve the conflict through diplomatic means. Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow announced that talks are scheduled to take place in Thailand’s Chanthaburi province, under the framework of an existing bilateral border committee.
The discussions are set to follow a meeting in Kuala Lumpur between ASEAN representatives. Sihasak also indicated that the negotiations would be held on Wednesday, reflecting a coordinated effort to de-escalate tensions in the region. The diplomatic outreach signifies both countries’ acknowledgment of the urgent need to halt the violence and find a peaceful resolution.
Escalating Violence and Humanitarian Impact
Despite the diplomatic efforts, hostilities have persisted, breaking a previously agreed truce and causing heavy casualties. According to officials, at least 23 people have died in Thailand and 21 in Cambodia since fighting resumed. The conflict has displaced nearly 900,000 people from their homes, creating a severe humanitarian crisis along the border. Cambodia reports that Thai forces launched air strikes on its territory, further intensifying the conflict. These ongoing clashes have undermined previous hope for peace and have heightened security concerns in the region, emphasizing the importance of timely diplomatic interventions to prevent further escalation.
Continued Fighting Despite Diplomatic Efforts
The situation remains precarious, with fighting reported even after the announcement of upcoming peace talks. Cambodia’s Defence Ministry spokeswoman, Maly Socheata, confirmed that fighting was still ongoing as of Tuesday morning, with reports of Thai artillery shelling in the border city of Poipet. The continued violence underscores the fragility of the current ceasefire and the challenges of achieving lasting peace in the region.
