MP pushes for easier access to Swiss citizenship for foreign entrepreneurs
Deputy Andreas Gafner has asked the Federal Council this week to consider granting some foreign entrepreneurs based in Switzerland the right to a simplified naturalisation procedure.
The focus of this measure are company owners from the EU states who, during their residence in Switzerland, have created jobs, paid taxes, and generally contributed value to Swiss economy and society, he said.
Thousands of people refuse social assistance for fear of consequences
Around 300,000 people live in poverty despite having a job in Switzerland, but many forgo social assistance for fear of losing their residency permit.
According to the Federal Social Insurance Office (FSIO) and the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), approximately 168,000 working-age individuals were affected in 2023; including their family members, this figure rises to 300,000, including 78,000 children.
People from third countries are particularly affected, even if they are employed.
Fears of losing Swiss residency permits are common: studies reveal that 20 to 40 percent of people entitled to social aid do not apply for it. The main reason is fear of repercussions on their immigration status.

“Due to the increased passenger volume, longer waiting times may occur, especially during peak hours – for example at check-in, security checkpoints or passport control,” she added.
