Colombia’s Political Elite Is Embracing China Ahead of Elections

Bilateral trade between China and Colombia rose 13% in 2024 from the previous year to $20.8 billion, according to China’s customs authority. Colombia’s trade deficit with the Asian giant widened to $12.4 billion last year, from $6 billion five years earlier. Colombia primarily imports from China are machinery and transport equipment, electronics and telecommunications goods, vehicles and parts, iron and steel products, and plastics, according to official data. China, in turn, buys energy and mineral commodities from Colombia, including fuels and metals. China is currently Colombia’s largest trade partner after the US.
