Japan’s largest urban fire in decades rips through 170 buildings

A huge fire broke out in the city of Oita, on the Japanese island of Kyushu, damaging at least 170 buildings and forcing residents to evacuate, authorities said.

Aerial footage showed the scale of the blaze, said to be the size of seven football fields, that burned through several residential buildings near a fishing port.

It is Japan’s largest urban fire since 1976, excluding incidents caused by earthquakes.

Local media say one person was killed, while the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
