Doctor issues warning for anyone thinking they’re just suffering from a bad hangover

While many people may think they’re suffering from a heavy night out, in reality, too many of these people could be facing a silent and lethal toxin.

According to official UK data, deaths from methanol poisoning may be under-reported domestically, although the global mortality rate remains high.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has recently expanded warnings to eight new countries following a “rise in cases of death and serious illnesses caused by alcoholic drinks tainted with methanol” including popular UK tourist destination, Mexico.

Prof M.D Ismail Cinel, a doctor from Acibadem, wants to generate public awareness that those who are experiencing, what they think, is a bad hangover could actually be a sign of something more serious.

“Methanol poisoning is extremely dangerous, and in most cases, sadly, ends up fatal. The body converts methanol into formaldehyde and formic acid, two very toxic compounds that can cause severe metabolic acidosis.

“These substances damage the optic nerve, which can lead to blindness, or can harm the brain, kidneys and other organs. Without rapid treatment, this can result in a coma, respiratory failure or even death.”

Prof M.D Ismail Cinel discusses what the key warning signs may be, and how long it could take to experience these symptoms.

“Initial symptoms may not start until 12-24 hours after your drink has been laced with methanol, and you could be completely fine up until then.

“You may think it’s a longer and more severe hangover than normal, as some of the initial symptoms can be quite similar.

“Symptoms may include a headache, nausea, vomiting; all things many Brits experience from taking a night too far. However, when this is alongside abdominal pain and dizziness, it could sadly be methanol poisoning.

“As these symptoms progress, you can deteriorate very, very quickly. These can lead to blurred or tunnel vision, confusion, rapid breathing or, if it does continue, going into a coma or even a fatality.”

Prof M.D Ismail Cinel advises that spotting the symptoms early is the absolute key to avoiding a potential death.

“If you suspect that you’ve consumed a suspicious alcoholic drink, particularly if you’re abroad in one of the countries listed on the UK Government website, or your hangover does seem worse and longer than normal, you need to seek medical attention immediately.

“Rather than call 111 or wait until you get a GP appointment, it’s better to rush into your nearest Accident and Emergency department and tell them that you suspect you have methanol poisoning. They’ll give you antidotes such as fomepizole or ethanol, and also possible dialysis.

“You may feel silly going to a doctor for a headache after a big night out, but a headache should get better over time rather than worse, and a typical hangover shouldn’t bring on additional dizziness or confusion as the day goes on.”
