More than 30,000 Orthodox Jews traveled to the Ukrainian city of Uman to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, from September 22 to 24. The city is home to the grave of Rabbi Nachman (1772-1810), a key figure for one branch of Orthodox Judaism. The celebration took place despite warnings from the Ukrainian government that it could not guarantee travelers’ safety in the midst of the war with Russia.
