It has often been said – and it is mostly true – that it is difficult to find truly ugly towns and villages in Switzerland. And yet, according to one ranking, they do exist.
It has often been said – and it is mostly true – that it is difficult to find truly ugly towns and villages in Switzerland. And yet, according to one ranking, they do exist.
The new ranking, released by Bilanz Magazine and IAZI real estate platform, focuses on Switzerland’s ‘most attractive’ communities – more about this below.
At the very end of the list, however, there are 10 so-called ‘loser’ municipalities – the ones that apparently lack in charm, infrastructure, or both.
And here they are…
Mümliswil-Ramiswil, Solothurn
Riviera, Ticino
Le Locle, Neuchâtel
Sainte-Croix, Vaud
Biasca, Ticino
Bellach, Solothurn
Tresa, Ticino
Val-de-Travers, Neuchâtel
Courrendlin, Jura
Leysin, Vaud
Beauty (or lack of it) must really be in the eye of the beholder because many (if not all) of these places actually look beautiful.
For instance, this is the ‘biggest loser,” the Vaud mountain community of Leysin:

… and this is Biasca, in Ticino:

What’s wrong with these pictures?
That’s just the thing – nothing at all.
In fact, many towns in other countries have good reasons to be envious.
However, the fault – if it must be assigned – lies with the criteria on which all the communities were evaluated: 56 wide-ranging categories, such as taxes, safety, real estate market, public transport, shopping opportunities, and quality of life in general.
This means that they all fall short in certain practical aspects of life rather than in natural beauty.
And the winners are…
Just as scenic and picturesque, but more diversified in terms of of what they have to offer to their residents, are these ‘most attractive’ communities – at least according to Bilanz:
Freienbach, Schwyz
Altendorf, Schwyz
Maienfeld, Graubünden
Horn, Thurgau
Oberkirch, Lucerne
Meggen, Lucerne
Zug, Zug
Hergiswil, Nidwalden
Feusisberg Schwyz
