AI-driven companionship has surged from niche novelty to global phenomenon, reshaping digital relationships while attracting millions of users and billions in investment.

Key takeaways

  • The AI Girlfriend market, valued at $2.8 billion in 2024, is projected to surge to $9.5 billion by 2028.
  • Global searches for “AI Girlfriend” skyrocketed by 2,400% between 2022 and 2024, signaling mainstream curiosity.
  • With 55% of users engaging daily and spending an average of $47 per month, AI companionship is becoming a normalized part of digital life.

According to new industry data, the global AI Girlfriend market, valued at $2.8 billion in 2024, is on track to reach $9.5 billion by 2028. This surge reflects not only consumer demand for digital companionship but also a wave of venture capital funding that jumped from just $7 million in 2021 to nearly $300 million by 2022.

Search Interest Skyrockets

Public curiosity around AI companionship is soaring. Google searches for “AI Girlfriend” jumped by 2,400% between 2022 and 2024, while related terms like “virtual girlfriend” and “AI companion” saw similar triple-digit increases worldwide.

In February 2024 alone, over 73,000 monthly searches for “AI relationship bots” were recorded, with more than 1.6 million English-language searches annually for AI chatbot girlfriends.

The U.S. leads global search volume with 693,600 queries, followed by India (287,160), the UK, Canada, and Germany, illustrating both widespread interest and regional differences in adoption.

Daily Engagement and Spending Habits

Beyond curiosity, engagement metrics suggest AI companionship is becoming a routine part of users’ lives. Data shows that 55% of users interact with their AI girlfriend daily, while average spending on premium features reaches $47 per month.

Character AI dominates the sector with 97 million monthly visits in March 2024, underscoring its position as the leading platform in this fast-growing market.

Who Is Using AI Girlfriend Platforms?

Demographics reveal a predominantly young user base. The average age is 27, with millennials and Gen Z making up the majority. Roughly 28% of men aged 18–34 report having tried an AI Girlfriend app, while women account for 18% of users overall.

Attitudes toward digital companionship are also shifting: one in five young people is open to the idea of an AI or virtual partner, and 20% of men on dating apps have already experimented with AI relationship platforms.

The data also points to broader social trends. A higher proportion of men under 30 report being single (63%) compared to women (34%), suggesting that demand for AI companionship may be partly driven by changing relationship dynamics among younger demographics.

Global Reach and Cultural Impact

Interest in AI Girlfriend platforms spans continents. Alongside the U.S. and India, notable engagement is emerging from the Philippines, Malaysia, Pakistan, and the Netherlands, showcasing how digital companionship is resonating across diverse cultural and economic contexts.

Analysts suggest this phenomenon is not merely a fad but part of a deeper transformation in how technology mediates emotional and social connections. As platforms evolve, AI companions are expected to become more lifelike, personalized, and integrated into daily life.

With soaring market valuations, skyrocketing search interest, and daily engagement from millions of users, the AI Girlfriend industry is rapidly moving from the margins to the mainstream. What began as an experiment in conversational AI is now reshaping the landscape of human relationships, raising both opportunities and questions about the future of intimacy in the digital age.
