New Swiss watch is making fun of US tariffs; Migros and Coop recall potentially contaminated spices; and more news in our Friday roundup.
Swatch mocks Donald Trump with a special ‘39%’ watch
Swiss watchmaking giant Swatch is capitalising on the controversy surrounding US president’s 39-percent tariff on Swiss products.
The watch’s design is full of nods to the current trade saga in Switzerland. On the dial, the numbers 3 and 9 have been reversed, so that the famous 39 is now clearly visible. On the back, a small “%” sign has been engraved on the battery cover. The sale price is set at 139 francs, which is symbolic as well.
It’s a limited edition, available only in 11 boutiques in Switzerland and online, a Swatch Group spokesperson said.
That’s because “we hope this measure [steep tariffs] will be short-lived,” the spokesperson explained.
“We will stop selling this watch as soon as the United States changes its customs duties against Switzerland.”

Zurich to allocate 122 ‘affordable’ apartments
In a move to relieve an ongoing shortage of affordable rental accommodations, the city is building 122 new apartments in Zurich’s Kreis 4 district, which should be ready for occupancy next summer.
The project will provide housing for around 360 people.
A four-room apartment will cost 1,850 francs per month, and a three–room one, 1,590 francs – reasonable rents in Switzerland’s most expensive city.
Anyone interested can apply online. The deadline is September 25th.
