A week after the Swiss Post announced that it would stop sending parcels to the United States, certain shipments are again possible.
On August 26th, the Swiss Post had stopped accepting shipments to the United States, following President Donald Trump’s executive order abolishing the exemption limit of $800 for goods imported into the USA .
To complicate matters further, the United States also introduced new customs clearance rules, which are different from the Universal Postal Union’s regulations applied previously.
This means that all customs duties need to be paid before shipping the goods to the US.
While intended to stop shipments of cheap merchandise from China and other markets, the measure ultimately affects anyone who wants to send goods to friends or relatives in the US.
(Other countries in Europe and around the world are also affected by this move and have taken this measure as well).
What changed?
From Thursday, September 4th, “private individuals will able to send gift consignments of up to $100 (equivalent 80 francs) addressed exclusively to private individuals,” the Swiss Post said, adding that electronic devices or electronic data carriers cannot be included in packages.
Gifts with a value of more than $100 (80 francs) are still not permitted, however.
However, letters (including official documents and certificates), as well as express items sent via URGENT Express International with FedEx Express Swiss Post GmbH are not affected by the decision to stop accepting US-bound shipments.
