Starting in September, extensive maintenance and modernisation of Switzerland’s SBB network will cause disruptions on a number of key lines in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Here’s what you should know.

The works will cause interruptions in rail service between Lausanne and Puidoux (Vaud) for two weekends –  from September 5th to 8th, and from November 28th to December 1st, the SBB announced.

Long-distance and regional trains will be replaced on this route by buses between Lausanne and Palézieux (IR15) and between Lausanne and Fribourg (IC1).

For long-distance journeys on the east-west axis, passengers are advised to use the Pied du Jura line (via the IC5 connections).

On this section, the work involves the renewal of safety installations and structures between La Conversion (Lutry) and Puidoux.

Overview of other works scheduled for the rest of 2025

August 29th-September 1st and September 19th-22nd:

Trains will be replaced by buses between Payerne (Vaud) and Murten (Fribourg) for the repair of level crossings and preparatory work related to the replacement of a railway bridge.

September 6th-September 7th:

During the scheduled connection of a railway bridge at Col-des-Roches, passengers will use line R20 between La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle, (Neuchâtel), and then a replacement bus to Le Locle-Col-des-Roches.

September 13th-15th:

In Vaud, regional train traffic will be replaced by buses between Lausanne and Cully.

IR90/95 trains will be diverted via Palézieux (journey time extended by approximately 30 minutes).

October 11th-12th:

Track renewal work in Ependes (Vaud) will require the replacement of trains with buses between Chavornay and Yverdon-les-Bains.

October 10th-13th:

Replacement of two railway bridges over the Saltina River and work on protective walls between Visp and Brig (Valais).

Buses will substitute trains on this line.

November 8th-9th:

Trains will be replaced by buses between Villeneuve and Vevey (Vaud) due to aqueduct maintenance work.

“During each construction project, a replacement system is put in place to ensure a high-quality transport chain,” the SBB said.

Passengers are invited to consult the timetable online  or in the SBB Mobile app before their departure.

And in Italy…

Between August 30th and September 13th, 2025, EuroCity trains between Domodossola and Milan will be cancelled.

Replacement buses will run between Geneva, Martigny, and Milan, as well as between Domodossola and Milan.

From October to December 2025, various weekends of total interruptions are still expected, with replacement buses between Domodossola and Milan.
